Does your doctor really understand thyroid issues?

Do doctors really understand thyroid levels? My doctor takes
a blood test and tells me it is OK if it falls within the 'OK' range!
Well, it might be 'OK' for their charts, but it certainly isn't for
me. The problem is that so many Doctors (and I am talking
about every single known illness to man and woman) has
a guide chart for the seriousness of that particular illness.
It really is a case of 'Jack of all trades and master of none.'
If in doubt, tell your doctor that you are completely miserable,
you keep eating chocolate, (only kidding) you feel fat, or you
feel thin, you feel tired, undesireable, don't like hot weather,
your hands shake and you have no energy. If you go on like
this, your husband is going to run off with the office tart. Oh,
crying to your GP also helps. No, seriously, they hate that and
they certainly can't handle it. The bottom line is your doctor
does not understand thyroid related problems. The text book
he or she was given is outdated and certainly does not come up
with any answers you want to hear. So guys and gals, just put the
emotions up a couple of notches and try to get the outcome you
want. I know a lot of you are frustrated and dissapointed. Am I
right? Your thoughts are always welcome. Good luck. Sammi X

Great information about thyroid problems and glad to see that I'm not the only one with a stubborn (or should I say limited knowledge) GP about thyroid. I'll continue the chat. Thanks.

I'm so glad to finally hear some one else say what I have been saying for about 25 years--Dr.s are so clueless to this problem and all of the side effects that come with it. The test with the "ok range" is so outdated! They still use the same range and testing as they did for my mother's generation 40 years ago! How crazy is that? For the last 15 years or so I have had more knowledge about hypothyroidism than my GPs. Very frustrating! Has anyone else heard of rosacea being a symptom or related problem of hypothyroidism? I developed what has been diagnosed as rosacea and the treatments made it worse(tried4 different ) but when I switched from levoxyl to armour thyroid the problem has almost vanished!

Exactly right...I have been trying to get a diagnosis of hyperthyroidism/Graves Disease for 6 years. I have just about every symptom, yet because the tests show that I am normal, the doctors assume it's all in my head.

    Dear Sammi
First , please congratulate yourself, your viewers and your site for saving a life. I mean this. This is the first time I've felt hope in a very long time. I am a 43 year old single Mom with three children.I was diagnosed with a "thyroid problem" when I was about nine.My father said I had a 'goiter' and I was not concerned...especially since it didn't come with a new Barbie doll.I had some sort of testing I don't remember and began taking eltroxin .15.for an underactive thyroid (it seemed to have commited suicide.) The topic was not discussed nor was any information requested by my parents. The only thing I knew was that there was something "wrong" with me and ANY emotional ( or physical)"problem" I had from then on was a hoppin' good time for my mother to jump up and tell the world "It's JUST her thyroid" and then to walk away. Through the years my thyroid has been on its own roller coaster and its dragged my generally optimistic humourous little self with it. My doctors have blamed PMS...the weather...hormones...my fat appetite...my CHILDREN! you name it. I own five "thyroid handbooks". The thyroid specialist, who is two hours away from my town said
" I just don't know what to do with you" Gee thanks.A month ago I went to see my GP ( I live in Ontario, Canada) ...he said my thyroid test from the previous month was fine and if I felt "that rotten" I should eat from Canada's Food Guide and exercise more.He gave me an antidepressant prescription that I couldn't afford to get filled. Soon after, I couldn't stand to look at food ...I couldn't stand up! And the children ( twins are eleven) couldn't wake me up. Finally after coming around enough to hear them hollering and crying that they thought I was dead I promised them I'd go to the hospital. In all this time I had been diligently taking my thyroid prescription which was .175. The emergency room doctor took a thyroid test (among others) and my TSH was at 70. Not between .3 & 5 like it "should" be. No one knew why. So the team increased my meds to .2 and sent me home. Home where I've nearly frightened the wallpaper off the wall. I've traumatized the poor children by not waking up...my part time job is on the line because I cannot finish a sentence without help and I drive for a living...bad news. And the nurse from my clinic called yesterday sounding frantic. NOW my doctor wants to see me. ???? Now that I'm nearing "completely unstable" ? Now that my children are terrified , my finances in jeopardy and my emotions ready for the trash compactor? I've completely lost my lustre, my sense of humour and most of my hope. I haven't lost WEIGHT!...now I am here. Here at your site. For the first time in 30 whatever years I feel like I'm not some kind of circus sideshow and that I'm not alone. I am so relieved. I came to the internet looking for a support system. People I could write to and relate to...or even just listen to and give support TO. From all the websites I went to FOR support I kept getting places LOOKING for financial support. The frustration level! I'm not a supercomputer whiz!
So please post this where you see fit and know that you are welcome to write, ask questions, share humour (is there any) ...and know how badly I needed to find you. I will write about my next doctor appointment ( day after tomorrow). I'm hoping it will be enlightening. :) Now , I don't know what a blog is exactly ...I'm wondering is it a good thing or a bad thing? Do I want to be a blogger? I do love to dance ...but I'm not sure I should answer til I find out what it is. Betty

I was just recently diagnosed with hypothyroidism and started immediately on levoxyl my TSH level was 7.9 I was feelling so bad. What mad me run to the Dr was I had missed my period for 3 months and the longer I missed them the worse I felt. I am a 48 yr old women and according to my FSH levels (hormone levels) they were fine my OB/GYN sent me for a TSH test and WELLA! my thyroid level was way out of wack no wonder I felt so bad. However, I was told by friends, family oh its just perimenapuse well if perimenapuse felt that bad since its not a disease then I had a long road ahead of me feeling sickly all the time, cold, constipated, hives for no reason sick to my stomach when i ate or drank certain liquids or foods the list goes on. I have gone on many websites as to what is acceptable TSH levels and noticed alot of different website vary slightly. I have printed certain news letters on thyroid issues and will be giving it to my Dr on my next visit. So you woman out there if anyone says its perimenapause and your around my age group please don't think perimenapause makes you sick because it doesn't I am so glad that they found it...I do think I have had this for at least a year but the symptoms were not that severe so it was overlooked and yes my TSH levels were normal at the time but do look for varying symptoms because sometime there so minor you think your just tired or cranky for no reason... I went into my drs office saying I feel like crap started crying said i dont' like this feeling and then said in a very firm voice don't even mention antidepressants! I was not and am not depressed I felt more sad than anything but not depressed and since I started my thyroid medication I am slowly feeling normal again...

I am so releived to have found people who are going through similar instances such as mine.I was diagnosed 2 years ago with hyperthyroidism and am presently going down.Good old radioiodine and PTU.I've never felt so physically and mentally helpless in all of my 51 years. My teeth are are unhealthy and the local anesthetic is'nt working, my physical movements are of a 100 year old and my GP thinks I,m crazy when I have a thyroid rage. All because I was not given any info by my endo or my GP on the long term effects of this illness, I tend to remind them that I am a human being and should be oriented on what is to come. But I am now over this, and researching on thyroid disease and with a bit of fear.

Glad I found your website. Thought I was going mad. I had a thyroidectomy 7 years ago to cure Graves disease. Now on thryoxine and feel rubbish. Hair falls out, no sex drive, generally down and tired. GP says everything is normal and won't entertain trying me on Armour. What can I do?

I just found this web site and kudos to you. This is just amazing how I read so many stories and can relate so well. I have told my Dr. for years of all the symptoms I have been having and he tests and of course the test are norm. Now finally today I have a test result that my levels are too high. I have been on ltroxin for 17 years with no change in dosage. But now suddenly it has been too much...????I just don't understand. He said maybe cause I am getting older it has changed. He has also diagnosed me with perimenipause..I am 42.
Sometimes I feel so frustrated but what can I do? He is THE doctor.
Well this site is a great place and I hope to come regularly.

In 2003 the American Assoc recommended tthat thyroid limits be lowered to .3-3.0. Other assoc recommended 2.5. After 3 yrs of research my susspicion is that the tsh should be 1 or under. Some people report feeling their best with a tsh near zero. You should be treated to where you feel the best. Don't let your doctor go just by your test numbers. Thyroid needs to be caught and treated early. All you thyroid sufferers need to have your children tested at least after puberty. It looks as though tyroid is related to just about every illness there is. See the Israeli/US study on colon canceratwww.ats.org/news.php?id=144 andhttp://dermatology.cdlib.org/original/melaanoma/rosen.html, a study done by the veterans administration at Baylor Hospital in Texas showing a high incidence of hypothyroid in melanoma patients. You should also be alert to the possibility of celiac disease an autoimmune reaction to gluten found in wheat, rye and other grains. If this is ignored it can lead to intestinal lymphoma. You may have to pay for treatment yourself. In the US, about the only doctors that will treat early symptoms of thyroid are called alternative or holistic doctors.I have compiled a long list of thyroid symptoms many of which I have had including 4 heart attacks. I will be glad to help anyone I can. You may contact me by mail at "Thyroid, Post Office Box 1984, Greeneville, TN 37744 USA

What a great site! I had a thyroidectomy in September I started on .100 of synthroid then moved to .150. I finally contacted the ENT to tell him i was sluggish and couldnt lose a singe pound regardless of starving. I took a TSH test which showed I was slightly high so I was bumped to .200. I felt great and lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks. I took another TSH test. This time it showed low TSH and now the doc wants to reduce meds back to .150 where I felt like crap! I told the doctor I didt want to reduce the synthroid that i am happy like this. The nurse reacted like I was a spoiled psychotic brat! Has anyone else gone back and forth lie this with synthroid and TDH levels? DOnt I have a say in all this?

I havent felt the same since I had the surgery. After twenty years, I finally have a sex drive again! I have energy now! But I also have a wide range of emotions and bouts of depression. Is this the syntrhoid causing all this change?

    Any words of wisdom?

I have taken 180 mg. of Armour thyroid for 50 years prescribed by five different doctors in different
cities. Now because of four endocrinologists, who have tested nursing home individuals for only four months, decided every other living person needs less thyroid. I can't tell you how unprofessional this is to make a name for themselves on a four month test. My next complaint will go to the American Medical Association.

Hi I am dealing with this thyroid problem for awhile even though my doctor said it was fine. I was still feeling crappy. I went to see my Chiro which she also is a naturalpath. She gave some supplements which has helped bud I had a episode last week and I went to her and she said I needed some thing stronger. Just started too early to tell if it works yet. I am glad someone out there is feeling the same symtoms I am having, and not going crazy.

Hi Sammi. It's good to see a site like this. I am not certain where to turn or what to do, if anything, but I am definitely having thyroid- related problems with my health, and would like to gain a better understanding of what is going on. I went into urgent care with heart palpitations, and the doctor there had taken blood tests, and said my thyroid levels were high, indicating hypothyroidism, so I was told to get a regular doctor, which I did. The new doctor tested me and said my thyroid levels were normal. I was also told that my Anti-TPO levels were high, and that the ultrasound test results indicated that I had a 7mm lump or nodule on the left side of my thyroid, but the doctor said none of this is anything to worry about. He had a very nonchalant attitude. I left his office feeling so upset and confused. I think it is ridiculous how one doctor tells me I have abnormal TSH levels, while the other says I am normal, and I feel I have nowhere to turn for help. I am having most if not all of the symptoms of Hypothyroidism, and it has gotten so bad that I cannot even find the energy or focus to do simple things anymore. The doctor recommended that I see a Naturopathic physician, but unfortunately, I cannot afford to do that. I have some specific questions as to my test results and, and I am wondering where would I be able to find the help or answers I need? Thanks

I have to say that this site is an eye opener and it's good to know I'm not alone. I'm 45 and have had this since I was a young girl. But Wait! Theirs more. I was just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago and I'm on my third medication. The Dr.finally settled on Armour. It has helped me with the foggy brain and some of the forgetfulness but, it certainly can't bring back my childhood. My symptoms plagued me even as a child. I couldn't sleep, remembering was impossible the depression kept me from wanting to do anything. I failed at everything I attempted, eating was a chore and keeping weight on was impossible, now girls, I know that you're all saying I wish I had this problem but, if you saw me you would probably run the other way. Like many of you, I'm reading and trying to take some control of my life in hopes to find solutions to all the other symtoms I have and just like you guys their are many. My understanding of why Dr.s don't like to diagnose this,is the fact that it's a lot of work and either they don't have time or don't want to take time so where does that leave us. I would like to share a book title with you that has helped me (The Thyroid solution by Ridha Arem, M.D.) I hope this helps and if anyone has other books to share that really will give solutions PLEASE share.

    Sincerely

Ok now I am having a different problem. Went to the doctor for my yearly exam- new doctor from last year. She ran a TSH test- came back with a level of 17. Has her nurse call me and tell me to take the medicine because I have a hypothyroid and come back in six weeks. I said no because I know nothing about this and I want some info. Made an appointment with her. We went over symptoms and I really do not have many. Not overly tired, not constipated, hair, skin, nails, cholestral all fine. I lost 25 pounds last year. No heart problems. She never examined the thyroid area. I asked for a referal to and edno but will have to wait until Dec. for an appointment. I am not taking the medication. Am I doing the right thing. I did not have a T4 or a T3 test.

All I can say is say is this, from experience your thyroid level goes up and down. If you have another test I am sure ut will be different. I had alot of issues this past year with thyroid, weight loss (20 pounds) feeling sick votmitting, nausea, insomina, depression, emotional break downs severe sinus issues. I started to go natural path in April he did a test found that I had 5 different parasites and fungal in my intestines and my adrenal & immune system were very very weak, wasn't able to a detox because I lost too much weight so I had to do it slowly. He helped what he could but for insomia and depression (which I didn't think I had) he suggested to go to the doctor for some medication. I did that the first 3 weeks were hell I had lost 11 pounds in one week but after that it seems to be better, the doctor felt that stress was a big part of it ( even though I didn't feel stressed)luckily work told to stay off until I was better. It has been 3 months and everything seems like it's heading the right way I am taking alot of vitamins and homeapathic remedy's I have gained my 10 pounds I lost. I just started to get some of my strength back and starting to execise. My adrenals are getting better but still weak. I am down to 1 parasite so I am on detox for that since I have been on it I have seen improvement. It could be so many things. I thought too it was premenapause. I would take the test to be sure.

I finally got a call back from my endocrinologist after a week, and I had asked him to take me off Levoxyl and put me on Armour Thyroid, and he refused. I have been losing my hair over the past couple of years (since about 3 years after having RAI for hyperthyroid) and he said that there is no correlation between T4 only and hair loss. However everything I have read in my weeks and weeks of research says that in many people there is. I told him I generally felt lousy - couldn't lose weight, had lost the ability to be happy, was losing my hair, etc. etc.etc.
He told me I needed to see a dermatologist about my hair, and that maybe we should do a testosterone blood test. I am beside myself. To be turned down like a child being told basically how I was wrong, that I didn't know what was really wrong with me is beyond infuriating. I am considering taking a raw thyroid extract from a vitamin/health food store. My only concern is that it is very hard to find out what the dose is on these nutritional supplement products. Does anyone have any advice? Can I get Armour Thyroid or some other natural medicine from Canada? I am absolutely at my wit's end over this whole thing. The though of being unhappy, fat and bald is more than I can handle!
    Thanks

Ok, so it's been about 2 years since I was first diagnosed with a multinodular goiter. I've been seeing my GP and an endocrinologist but they really haven't done anything for me. I get a sonogram of my thyroid done every every year but I don't see my endo until 6 months after it's taken so it seems pretty pointless to me. All I have been told is that it appears that my nodules are remaining approximately the same size and my TSH are within "normal" levels whatever that means. This, however, does not tell me why I have nodules on my thyroid. I am a fairly healthy 21 year old in college, ever since I was diagnosed though I have become progressively more fatigued (even when I sleep 8 hours a night), I bruise easily, have a terrible time healing, am prone to skin infections, and have fainted after simple blood tests or shots which I never had a problem with before. Last year after I had been eating the healthiest of my life and sleeping consistently I went to the doctor to have blood tests to try to figure out why I waxs still feeling fatigued if my TSH levels were "normal". Turns out I was severely lacking in B12 and vitamin D and had to be given shots every month and take special high dose vitamins. Maybe my symptoms are completely unrelated but I know there is something wrong and I can't seem to get anyone to pay attention. Does anyone have any insight for me?

  • At 3:16 PM, Blogger Unknown said…

Hey Sammi don't think it's just your GP. I go to one of the "top" endos at one of the top hospitals in the US and I might as well be yelling down a tunnel. All he gieves me is the old conventional wisdom. (I just forwarded the article on the T3/T4 study from this site, but so far no response.) What I decided is that a really good, well-educated and caring nutritionist is a much better choice for me...and that's what I'm doing. I still go to my endo, since the nutritionist can't prescribe for me, but other than that I follow my nutritionist's directions. I am taking about 15 vitamin pills 3 times a day, but I have finally found a solution. The weight is slowly coming off (4 lb in 3 weeks) even though the only difference I have made to my eating habits is eliminated carbs and started using stevia as a sweetener. It took me several years to get here. If it takes a year to get back, I'm OK with that.

It's a long and painful journey to find a solution to a thyroid problem. And the information I have found here has not only helped me, it has given me hope when I just wanted to crawl under a rock. Good luck to all of you still looking for the right road.

i am so confused and fed up. I am on the verge of not taking any more carbimazol and not having any more blood tests done. Even the bloomin endocrinologist isnt making sense to me. I really want to speak to somebody who understands this disease. After months of having my carbimazol reduced/increased/increased again I had temp 40 degrees and terribly fast heart rate, went to A/E apparently I met the criteria for sepsis. However my white cells were normal. TFT results werent back when they discharged me the next day. Temp reduced heart back to its usual rapid rate. Had v brief call from endocrinologist saying that my T3 had been high, take more carbimazole and he would write to me. That was beginning of august, heard nothing, so emailed him today asking whether this had been a thyroid storm, he said no it hadn't and he would see me at my next appt in december, meanwhile take 30mg carbimazol and have another blood test. I want to scream, can anyone explain what happened to me to be so ill, have an elevated t3 (t4 also up but always has been and TSH undetectable as previous results) and this not be a storm? I really really hope someone can help

I would not agree because when I was complaining about headache and heart ache I was asked to get a thyroid test done. There are good and bad doctors...but after you are detected with a disease it is better if you go to the specialist in that scope.

    Just found this site!

Betty from Ontario - you are amazing, keeping your sense of humour in spite of everything. I really felt for you reading your comment. I was diagnosed 19 months ago after going to my doctor because I thought I was going to die. I could hardly breathe, walk, talk or write. My blood test said my TSH was 97.2 [!!] and my T4 was 2.6. He said 'yes, you could have died, you were almost at coma level'. I have found that once they get your blood test saying what they want it to say, they totally lose interest in treating you with anything other than Levothyroxine (I live in London UK)and all the remaining symptoms - lots! - they really don't want to hear about. I'm desperate to lose some of the 4.5st (65lbs) I put on, but nothing seems to work. I have just started the coconut oil diet and have lost 3lbs since Saturday, so maybe if I can stick to it....but of course it's easter soon and socialising and being asked round to eat at others' houses ...

Carole - why should you have to wait another 6 weeks? If you have had all the symptoms for a while and your blood test says you're low, then you are low. He should start you on meds straight away and then test you again in 4 weeks to see what effect the meds have had.

Not all Docs are clueless...but most of them in fact use what is called a pathological range for blood tests and not a function range.

A function range is much more accurate and meaningful.

Make sure you ask for the functional range.

Well I see my lab test every time. All I can say is advocate for yourself. Read up on Thyroid and when you see your doctor insist that he medicate you based on symptoms not fitting into the range. Your body produces T3 and T4. T3 is the gas in the tank and T4 is the gas at the station. If your body produces both, why are doctors giving us only T4, thinking our body will convert what it needs to T4. I convinced my doctor to give me T3 and T4, even though he thinks it wont help me. Well w/in a day, all my symptoms went away. I dont have joint pain anymore nor muscle weakness or freezing all the time. I can actually think without a shroud of fog around my head. Me I am changing to a specialist and the first thing I want to know is how he treats hypothyroidism. That will determine if I use him or keep looking for a doctor with some sensitivity and understanding of the disease. Get some books and advocate for your self!

I hope you are doing well and not experiencing any of the hyperthyroidism  symptoms. I recently was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism as well. Just today I received the diagnosis of thyroid nodules (multiple nodules/cysts?). I have a RAIU scheduled for the 31st. Thats a radioactive uptake test. I believe it measures the amount of iodine the thyroid is absorbing. Have you ever heard of the ethanol ablation? I heard that is injections into nodules to make them dissolve. Please let me know what you may think? Any thoughts or knowledge?

    Take care

I have been through the hyperthyroid, nearly dead after not being able to walk, think or keep any weight on to 1 year of PTU and feeling fine, on to 2 rounds of I131. I waited for my internist to start replacing my hormone. Had to see an endocrinologist for treatment. At present I am having lower back and leg pain in the back of my legs due to decreased vertebral space per x-ray. Taking levoxyl .50 mcg, ibuprofen, a muscle relaxant, heating pad and rest. I can barely walk. Has anyone else had this problem and have you seen any improvement?

Most doctors will only run a TSH test to assess your thyroid status. At our Naturopathic clinic, www.drmorsillo.com, I have found that a full thyroid panel of lab tests will allow for a more complete understanding of patients' thyroid function.
